>Aquileia

The Patriarchal basilica of this Roman colony has
the attraction of the oldest and biggest floor
mosaic of the Christian world. And in
addition to archaeological excavations, there are
museums of early Christian civilisation,
archaeology and the Patriarchate.

>Barcis

vine-covered slopes of Collio to the valleys of
Natisone, rich with art treasures and history.

>Gorizia

The name of Garden City, bestowed on it in
centuries past, is still valid today. Build around
the Castle hill, the town has conserved a
balanced development of buildings and the
green spaces. Its special atmosphere, a mix
of various cultures, is to be found in the
medieval district and the narrow street of the
old centre, the fine early 20th century villas
and the modest but picturesque workshops
of the old Jewish ghetto.

A popular seaside and thermal centre. Its
unmistakably Venetian centre contains three
treasures of the early Christian period: the

and church of Santa Maria delle Grazie.

Villa Manin, a magnificent eighteenth century villa
surrounded by a spacious park, is now the venue
for prestigious exhibitions and a host of
spectacular events.

>Palmanova

A renaissance fortified town built by the Venetians
to a remarkable star-shaped plan.

>Pordenone

now in ancient times as Portus Naonis, founded
on the banks of the Noncello river, the town
developed along the north-south axis of the
Contrada Maggiore, an old trading route. The
Duomo, with its fine bell-tower, has works by
Tintoretto, Amalteo, Calderadi and Giovanni
Antonio de Sacchis (know as “Il Pordenone”).
It is the starting point of a walk on which visitors
can enjoy the sequence of attractive medieval
buildings that make up the town centre.

>Sacile

The “Garden of the Serenissima” of old Sacile
owes its harmonious historic centre to the
Venetians, whose nobility spent their holidays
in the green surroundings of the town’s
impressive palazzi and villas.

>San Daniele

A hill town renowned for its ham, San Daniele
is also rich in monuments. The most important
are the 18th century Duomo, the gothic church
of Sant’ Antonio and the Guarneriana Library.

>Trieste

Located between the hills and the sea, the Regional
capital has a range of monuments bearing witness to
its Roman origin and medieval past on the hill of San
Giusto – the basilica, Castle and Cathedral,
decorated with precious apsidal mosaics. Its more
recent history, its Habsburg tradition and its
cosmopolitan role are evident in the streets of the
centre with elegant neoclassical buildings and
churches of a broad range of denominations.

>Udine

Heart and symbol of the land of Friuli, Udine has
conserved striking testimonies of its medieval and
Venetians history in its squares, buildings and the
monuments. Piazza Libertà, at the heart of the
town, dominated by the imposing dimensions of
the Castle and characterised by the Loggia del
Lionello and the magnificent clock-tower, has
been rightly dubbed “the finest Venetian square
on dry land”. The presence in churches and
palazzi of many of Giovanbattista Tiepolo’s
masterpieces has also earned Udine the name
of “Città del Tiepolo”.
